Rebecca was making dinner when she heard the news on the radio. Gina Rosen, formerly married to Zach Rosen, had been murdered. She dropped her knife and held on to the kitchen counter for dear life. Surely this wasn’t the woman she had heard Ethan threaten. But it was the name ‘Gina’ and his last name was ‘Rosen’. She tamped down the panic that was threatening to overtake her and forced herself to think. Ethan—the man who held her in his arms with such tenderness, the man who had been so concerned about her son, the man who looked out for his brother’s welfare—that man was not capable of killing anyone. The more she thought about it, the more she was able to convince herself it couldn’t be Ethan.

She turned off the news and continued making dinner. It kept her mind occupied while she tried to figure out what to do.

She wanted to call Ethan and make sure he was okay, but she didn’t want to butt into his business. She had been so adamant about him not interfering in her life. How could she then turn around and interfere in his? But by the time she and Andrew were finished eating, she couldn’t hold off any longer. She had to call him.

Ethan answered on the first ring, like he had been waiting at the phone for a call.

“Hi, it’s Rebecca. I’m calling to see if everything’s okay with you.”

Ethan sighed on the other end of the phone. “How did you hear about it?”

“On the radio. So was it the woman I heard you talking to in the cabin?”

“Yes, my brother’s ex-wife.”

It was her. Rebecca could hear the resignation in Ethan’s voice and it broke her heart. Dammit, she wished she could do something for him.

“I’m so sorry, Ethan. I can’t believe she’s dead.”

“I can. She was a user. She tried to get whatever she could extort from people. I’m sure she pushed someone too far. She tried to do it with me.”

Rebecca remembered the conversation she’d overheard in the cabin as well as Ethan’s frustration when he talked to Gina. That frustration was evident now and she wanted so much to alleviate it. “But you told me you had settled with her.”

“She was still trying to hold my brother up for more alimony.”

“Why was it your problem?”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. “Look, Rebecca, I appreciate your concern, but I don’t have time to discuss this with you now. I’m waiting for a call from my brother.”

His impatient tone stung. “Oh, sorry. I’ll let you go. But if I can do anything for you, let me know.”

“Thanks, bye.”

As she hung up, Rebecca couldn’t help but feel a stirring of anger. He was so eager to get into her business, but when the shoe was on the other foot, he was more closed up than she was. At least she told him what was going on. He didn’t even give her that courtesy.
